How My Engineering and Military Background Continue to Shape My Approach to Plastic Surgery

People are often surprised to learn that my professional journey did not begin in medical school. Before becoming a plastic surgeon, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served in the military. Those experiences continue to influence the way I approach every consultation, every surgical plan, and every procedure I perform at Lexington Plastic Surgery. While plastic surgery is often viewed as a blend of science and artistry, I believe it also requires careful planning, attention to detail, and disciplined execution. The principles I learned long before entering medicine have remained with me throughout my career and continue to shape the care I provide to my patients today.

Precision Begins Long Before Surgery

One of the greatest lessons I learned through engineering is that successful outcomes are rarely the result of chance. Every project begins with careful planning, thoughtful analysis, and an understanding of how every decision affects the final result. I bring that same philosophy into every patient consultation. Before recommending any procedure, I take time to evaluate each patient’s anatomy, medical history, aesthetic goals, and overall health. By creating an individualized surgical plan, I can recommend procedures that are both appropriate and realistic for each person. I believe that thoughtful preparation is one of the strongest predictors of successful cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Discipline Creates Consistency

My time at West Point taught me the importance of discipline, accountability, and maintaining high standards in everything I do. Those values have carried over into my career as a plastic surgeon in Lexington, Kentucky. Every patient deserves the same level of focus, preparation, and attention regardless of whether they are considering facial rejuvenation, breast surgery, body contouring, or reconstructive procedures. Consistency is essential in medicine because patients rely on their physician to deliver thoughtful care every step of the way. Maintaining those standards allows me to approach each procedure with confidence while never losing sight of the individual behind the surgical plan.

Combining Science with Artistic Judgment

Plastic surgery is unique because it requires both technical expertise and artistic vision. While my engineering background strengthened my analytical thinking, my medical training taught me to appreciate the balance, proportion, and symmetry that contribute to natural looking results. Every face and body is different, which means there is never a single formula for success. Instead, I carefully evaluate each patient’s features and goals to develop recommendations that complement their natural appearance. My objective is never to create dramatic change for its own sake, but rather to help patients achieve results that feel balanced, refined, and authentic.

Lifelong Learning Matters

Medicine is constantly evolving, and I believe one of my responsibilities as a physician is to continue learning throughout my career. My education at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and the Harvard Combined Plastic Surgery Residency Program provided an outstanding foundation, but education does not stop after residency. Advances in surgical techniques, technology, and patient safety continue to improve the field of plastic surgery, and staying informed allows me to offer patients the most appropriate options available. I believe that maintaining a commitment to lifelong learning ultimately benefits every individual who places their trust in my care at Lexington Plastic Surgery.

Every Patient Deserves an Individualized Plan

One lesson that has remained constant throughout my education, military service, and medical career is that no two situations are exactly alike. The same principle applies to cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Every patient has different goals, different anatomy, and different expectations, which is why I never believe in applying the same solution to everyone. My role is to listen carefully, answer questions honestly, and develop a treatment plan that reflects each patient’s unique circumstances. Personalized care allows patients to make informed decisions while feeling confident that their recommendations are designed specifically for them.

Trust Is Built Through Communication

While technical skill is essential, I believe communication is equally important in building successful patient relationships. Many people feel nervous before meeting with a plastic surgeon, especially if they are considering surgery for the first time. I encourage patients to ask questions, discuss their concerns, and openly share their goals throughout the consultation process. Honest conversations help establish realistic expectations and allow us to make decisions together. Building trust through communication creates a stronger physician patient relationship and contributes to a more positive overall experience.

A Foundation That Continues to Guide My Practice

Looking back, I recognize that every stage of my journey has contributed to the physician I am today. My experiences in engineering, military service, medical school, and advanced plastic surgery training have each reinforced the importance of preparation, precision, integrity, and lifelong learning. Dr. Theodore Gerstle continues to bring those values into every consultation and every procedure I perform at Lexington Plastic Surgery. My goal is to provide personalized care that reflects each patient’s unique needs while delivering natural looking results with safety and compassion at the forefront. For me, successful plastic surgery is not simply about performing a procedure. It is about building trust, developing thoughtful treatment plans, and helping every patient feel confident in the care they receive.
